STILLWATER, Okla. – The Oklahoma State wrestling team officially opened practice for the 2011-12 season Monday with a two-hour workout in the wrestling room at Gallagher-Iba Arena.
“I liked our workout,” coach John Smith said. “You don't always get to cover everything you want, but I felt like it was a good first day. We saw a lot of excitement in the room. Even a lot of fundamental skills sometimes can get boring, but we're reminding them of the routines that we've constantly got to be paying attention to. Routines can't get boring. We tried to emphasize that a lot in what we were teaching and what we were doing. I think everybody looked good today.”
The Cowboys spent the majority of the day going through practice and conditioning drills, with Smith naming intensity, sustainability and technique as focus areas.
“We've got a little bit more mature group this year,” Smith said. “I'm seeing some good things with habits and attitudes changing. That kind of puts me a little bit more at ease as we start. Easy to the point that the only thing I can really focus on is getting better. That's what I really got out of the day.”
OSU is scheduled to begin the season Nov. 18 at 7 p.m. with a match against Rutgers in Stillwater.
