STILLWATER, Okla. - Oklahoma State's women's basketball team closed out non-conference play on Tuesday night with a 79-33 win over Vermont in front of 2,051 fans inside Gallagher-Iba Arena.
On the same day they earned a national ranking, the 25th-ranked Cowgirls (12-1) won their fourth-straight game to match their best-ever start through non-conference play under head coach Kurt Budke. OSU also won 12 of its 13 non-league games to start the 2006-07 and 2007-08 campaigns.
For the second consecutive outing, sophomore Toni Young turned in a double-double performance, pouring in a game-high 21 points to go with 11 rebounds. The Del City, Okla., native recorded her seventh double-double of the year efficiently, hitting 10 of her 13 shots from the floor in just 19 minutes of action against the Catamounts (0-14).
The Cowgirls scored the game's first 14 points and never looked back, holding Vermont in single digits until the 6:15 mark of the first half. OSU `s defense limited the Catamounts to a 5-of-24 effort (21 percent) from the floor in the period while building a 39-18 lead heading into the intermission.
OSU used a 13-2 run to open the second half and put the game away.
The Cowgirl defense held Vermont to a 23.5 percent shooting night. OSU also forced 25 turnovers to extend its string of opponents with at least 20 miscues to seven.
Young was joined in double figures by freshman Vicky McIntyre, who scored 16 points to go with eight rebounds.
Jasmine Cooper paced Vermont with 11 points and five rebounds on the night.
The Cowgirls will begin Big 12 play on Jan. 9 when they travel to Kansas State for a 2:30 p.m. contest. The game will be televised by Fox Sports Net.
