Cowgirls Win In Double Overtime

EUGENE, Ore. - Whitney Wernimont's goal in the second overtime period lifted 19th-ranked Oklahoma State to a 1-0 win over Oregon Friday night at Pape' Field.
Following a foul by Oregon in the match's 104th minute, Wernimont stepped up and blasted a free kick from just outside the 18-yard box into the back of the net. The goal was the first of the senior's career and lifted the Cowgirls to 2-0-0 on the young season.
"That was a pretty exciting way to get my first goal ever," Wernimont said. "I felt really confident going up to take it. No one else wanted to step up and take it, but I was like, `I'll take it.'
"The way their wall was set up, there was a hole on the left side of the goal so I just tried to nail it low. Right after I hit it, I was like, `That's going in unless the goalie makes an amazing save!' It was a great feeling."
With the win, OSU ran its unbeaten streak to 12 games, just one shy of the school record.
"Going on the road against a good Pac 10 team and winning is not easy, and I was really proud of our team's effort to get the win," said OSU head coach Colin Carmichael. "Sometimes you gotta win ugly. That was an ugly game of soccer for both teams, but we fought through it and found a way to win."
OSU outshot the home team by a 17-8 margin in a game that saw both teams play the final 40 minutes with just 10 players after each team had a player sent off with a red card at the 62:47 mark.
AD Franch continued her outstanding play in goal for the Cowgirls as the sophomore keeper recorded her second shutout of the season and 13th of her career.
The teams battled to a scoreless first half in which neither team managed much offense, though the Cowgirls held a 5-2 advantage in shots.
OSU actually had several prime scoring opportunities in the opening half. The first came in the 24th minute when Colleen Dougherty sent a free kick in the box that a running Carson Michalowski just missed getting a head on.
The Cowgirls also barely missed a score late in the half. With just under a minute remaining, Michalowski had a shot blocked from close range. Taylor Mathews was there for the rebound, but her shot was saved by UO goalie Cody Miles.
OSU returns to action Sunday at 2 p.m. (CST) when the Cowgirls will be at No. 3 Portland.
