UNIVERSITY PLACE, Wash. - Oklahoma State's Peter Uihlein outlasted teammate Morgan Hoffman, 1-up, on Friday during their match at the U.S. Amateur to move into Saturday's semifinal round at Chambers Bay.
In a clash of two of the nation's premier players, Hoffmann and Uihlein, both of whom will be juniors this fall for the Cowboys, never held a lead of more than 1-up throughout the match.
"It's never fun having to play a teammate and one of my best friends. It's bittersweet, that's for sure," Uihlein said.
"All in all we played pretty good. He played a typical Morgan day. He hit pretty much every fairway and hit the ball solid. His distance control is spectacular. It just came down to I made some more putts at the end."
A quarterfinalist for the second time in three years, Hoffmann won the first with a par before his classmate drew even with an eagle at the par-5 fourth. Hoffmann once again jumped in front two holes later with a par at the seventh before Uihlein got back to level with a par at the ninth.
Uihlein, who was playing in the quarterfinals for the second-straight year, grabbed his first lead with a birdie at the 10th before Hoffmann quickly drew even with a par at the 11th.
With a birdie at the 12th, Uihlein moved back in front before Hoffmann moved the match back to all square for the final time at the 14th with a par.
At the 16th, Uihlein carded his fifth birdie of the day and used pars on the final two holes to hold off his teammate and move into the semifinals.
Uihlein will face Patrick Cantlay tomorrow at 8:45 a.m. (PST) and will be looking to become OSU's first championship-match participant since Hunter Mahan (2002) and Casey Wittenberg (2003) represented the Cowboys on back-to-back occasions.
