UNIVERSITY PLACE, Wash. - A pair of Oklahoma State players moved into the second round of match play at the U.S. Amateur with wins on Wednesday at Chambers Bay. Juniors Peter Uihlein and Morgan Hoffmann both moved into the round of 32.
Uihlein knocked off Cheng Tsung Pan of Chinese Taipei, 2 and 1, while Hoffmann opened match play with a 2-up win over Albin Choi of Canada.
Uihlein lost his second hole before squaring the match with an eagle at the par-5 fourth. Tsung answered with a birdie at the fifth. Uihlein squared the match again at the sixth and took his first lead with another eagle at the par-5 eighth before taking the 11th and 12th to go 3-up.
Tsung won the 14th before the duo parred the next three holes to close out the match. Uihlein's second-round opponent will be Emiliano Grillo of Argentina.
A first-team All-American a year ago, Uihlein carded rounds of 74 and 72 during stroke play to tie for 33rd and advance to match play.
Choi won the third to grab an early lead against Hoffmann before the second-team All-American squared the match with a birdie at the eighth. Hoffmann then birdied the ninth to grab a lead he would maintain the rest of the match. He added to his advantage with wins at Nos. 13 and 15 to go 3-up before Choi extended the match by claiming the 16th and 17th. Hoffmann bounced back with a win at the 18th and move on to face Richard Werenski.
Hoffmann moved into the match play bracket with a 144 total after carding rounds of 73 and 71 to tie for 13th place.
A third Cowboy, Kevin Tway, was eliminated in the first round, 1-up, by Blayne Barber. Tway, who shot 5-under par on the day, found himself 3-down through the first four after Barber opened with two birdies and an eagle. However, Tway clawed back to 1-down at the turn with birdies at the fifth and ninth. Trailing by two with three holes remaining, the All-American birdied the 16th to draw within one. However, the final two holes were halved to send Barber into Round Two.
