TULSA, Okla. - Annika Niemeier's goal in the 65th minute lifted No. 22 Oklahoma State to a 1-0 win over Oral Roberts in a preseason exhibition match Saturday night at the ORU Soccer Complex.
Niemeier connected on a header off a Megan Marchesano corner kick to provide the lone goal of the match. OSU outshot the Golden Eagles by a 29-5 margin in the contest.
"We were pretty sluggish in the first half and didn't play very well, but the effort was there. And in the second half, we came out with a lot more purpose and created a lot more chances and were unlucky not to score two or three times," said OSU head coach Colin Carmichael. "We always look for improvement, and we had that from the first half to the second half. So if we can have improvement from the second half to our game on Friday, we'll be good."
Neither team could manage a goal in the opening half, but the Cowgirls owned a distinct advantage in the attacking stats.
OSU recorded 11 shots in the first 45 minutes, with five of those on goal. But ORU goalie Amanda Wheeler kept the Cowgirls off the scoreboard with five saves.
Kyndall Treadwell led the OSU attack before intermission with four shots, three of those on goal. The Cowgirl junior finished with a game-high seven shots.
The Golden Eagles managed just three shots before halftime, with OSU All-Big 12 goalie AD Franch recording saves on each.
OSU continued its offensive attack and created two prime scoring opportunities early in the second half, but the Golden Eagles' defense again kept the Cowgirls off the scoreboard.
Just over four minutes into the half, Wheeler saved a shot by Treadwell, and a rebound shot by Sarah Brown was cleared off the line by an ORU defender.
The Cowgirls finally ended the scoring drought in the 65th minute on the beautifully executed corner kick.
Franch finished with three saves in the shutout performance, while Wheeler notched 10 saves for ORU.
OSU opens the 2010 regular season Friday when the Cowgirls host Bedlam-rival Oklahoma in a non-conference showdown at the Cowgirl Soccer Complex.
