DUPONT, Wash. - Oklahoma State rising junior Peter Uihlein posted a 4-under 68 during the final round at the 17th annual Sahalee Players Championship on Friday at The Home Course to roll to a seven-shot victory.
Uihlein finished with a 72-hole total of 271, 17-under, and seven shots clear of Pepperdine's Andrew Putnam. A 2010 first-team All-American, Uihlein's victory marked the second time in the last three years an OSU player has won the event. Trent Whitekiller, who just completed his college eligibility this past spring, won the tournament in 2008.
"I drove it well, putted well and my course management was good," Uihlein said. "When I had a good yardage I attacked."
"It got tougher as the week went on because the greens got firmer, so I had to be careful to be on the proper side of the fairway. Today I was smart and was able to take advantage of it."
During Wednesday's opening 36 holes of play, Uihlein carded a first-round 66 before following with a 71 in the afternoon. The Orlando, Fla., native trailed Putnam at the halfway point before firing his second bogey-free 66 of the event during his third round to grab a two-shot lead heading into Friday's closing round.
On Friday, Uihlein birdied the par-4 second before carding his first bogey in 25 holes at the third. However, he bounced back with three-straight pars and birdies on Nos. 7 and 10 to get to 2-under par for the day. Uihlein tacked on birdies at the 15th and 16th to pull away from the field.
In addition to his team-high three college victories this past season, Friday's triumph was the second major amateur win for Uihlein this year after he won the Dixie Amateur last December.
