BLUFFTON, S.C. - For the second time in three days, an Oklahoma State golfer has won a major amateur event as rising senior Kevin Tway won The Players Amateur at Belfair Golf Club on Sunday.
After teammate Peter Uihlein won the Sahalee Players Championship by seven shots on Friday, Tway used a final-round 65 to post a seven-shot victory of his own on Sunday afternoon.
With the win, Tway became the third Cowboy in the 11-year history of the event to be crowned champion. He joined Jonathan Moore, who won in 2006, and Rickie Fowler, who claimed medalist honors in 2007.
The Edmond, Okla. native began his final round one shot off the pace of Georgia Tech's James White before matching the low round of the tournament with a 65 to pull away from the field. Tway finished at 14-under 274, while White finished in a second-place tie with Ethan Tracy at 281.
After opening with rounds of 70 and 71, Tway used a third-round 68 that included a bogey-free 33 on his inward nine to climb from fifth place into second place and within one shot of White's lead.
The Cowboy All-American extended his error-free string to 27-straight holes with his 7-under-par closing round that featured five birdies and an eagle against no bogeys.
Tway birdied both par 5s on the front nine, making four at Nos. 2 and 7. He followed with birdies at Nos. 10 and 12 before getting to 6-under with an eagle at the 13th before closing out his run with a birdie at the par-3 16th.
With his victory, Tway earns an exemption into next April's Verizon Heritage, a PGA Tour event, which is held at Harbour Town Golf Links in Hilton Head, South Carolina.
Teammate Morgan Hoffmann was also in the field and carded a 291 total to finish tied for 25th place.
