Cowboys Look To Extend NCAA String at Atlanta Regional
Oklahoma State's men's golf team will be in search of an unprecedented 64th-straight NCAA Championship appearance this week when it begins NCAA Regional play on Thursday at Capital City Club's Crabapple Course. The top-ranked Cowboys, who are coming off their fourth-straight Big 12 title, will be the No. 1 seed in the Atlanta Regional and will begin play at 8 a.m. (EST) on Thursday. OSU will be grouped with Arizona State and Georgia Tech. Teams will be regrouped according to score after the first and second rounds. Live scoring for the event will be available at golfstat.com.
OSU In Regional Play
OSU has won seven regional titles dating back to 1989. That year, the three-regional system was implemented and used until 2008. During that time, the Cowboys competed in the Central Regional every year, winning titles in 1989, 1990, 1997, 2002, 2003 and 2006. Last year marked the first time a six-regional format was used. OSU hosted the South Central Regional and won its seventh regional title. The event also signaled the seventh time a Cowboy has claimed medalist honors at the event with Kevin Tway finishing first for the second-straight year. Kevin Wentworth (1989, 1990), Alan Bratton (1995), Bo Van Pelt (1997) and Jonathan Moore (2006) have also been regional medalists.
Regional Rewind ... 2009 South Central Regional
Oklahoma State's men's golf team wrapped up its 63rd consecutive NCAA Championship berth after rolling to the team title at the NCAA South Central Regional at Karsten Creek Golf Club. The Cowboys entered the final round with a 13-shot lead and extended their margin to 22 after posting an 8-over 296 for a 54-hole total of 881, 17-over par. OSU excelled on its home course, finishing as the only team with sub-300 scores all three days. Overall, the Cowboys posted three of the eight rounds under 300 in the tournament. The victory was OSU's third consecutive and fifth overall of the season. The victory also marked the first time in five tries the Cowboys have won on their home course. Kevin Tway became the fifth different Cowboy to win a tournament during the season, firing a 2-under 70 during his final round to finish at even-par 216. The Edmond, Okla., native bested teammate Peter Uihlein by one stroke to earn his second career victory
Refresher Course On Current Format
Last year saw the implementation of a new format. Gone is the three-regional, 27-team setup that saw the top 10 teams and two individuals on non-qualifying teams advance to the championship finals. The new qualifying format features six regionals with three sites hosting 13 teams and 10 individuals, while the other three regionals have 14 teams and five individuals. Five teams and one individual not on those teams will advance from each regional to the NCAA Championship.
What 2 Watch 4
The Cowboys will be looking to advance to the NCAA Championship for the 64th consecutive time ... OSU has put together an unprecedented string of 63 consecutive appearances that becomes that much more impressive when considering the second-longest streak is Georgia's 12-straight berths ... Kevin Tway has claimed medalist honors in each of his two previous regional starts, winning the Central Regional in 2008 and the South Central Regional in Stillwater last year.
