CHICAGO - Oklahoma State soccer signee Hayley Harryman has been named the 2009-10 Gatorade Oklahoma Girls Soccer Player of the Year, it was announced today by The Gatorade Company and ESPN RISE.
The award, which recognizes not only outstanding athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the field, distinguishes Harryman as Oklahoma's best high school girls soccer player. She is also now a finalist for the Gatorade National Girls Soccer Player of the Year award, which will be announced later this month.
A 5-foot-10 senior goalkeeper at Edmond North High School, Harryman has recorded 12 shutouts and sports a 0.53 goals-against average this season. Harryman's play in goal has helped the Huskies to a 16-1 record this season, and Edmond North will take on Tulsa Union for the Class 6A state championship on Saturday.
Harryman earned all-district and all-conference honors each of the last two years and was named to this year's All-State team.
"Harryman is a very aggressive player," said Larry Truesdell, head coach of Edmond Santa Fe High School. "She doesn't sit back on her line and rely on athleticism. She's going to come out and attack you."
Along with her athletic prowess, Harryman has maintained a 4.23 GPA in the classroom. She has volunteered locally on behalf of blood donation drives, clothing drives, the Special Olympics and as part of a fundraising campaign to benefit the Oklahoma Brain Tumor Foundation.
"I am very excited for Hayley and very proud of her," said OSU head coach Colin Carmichael. "To be named the Gatorade Player of the Year is a tremendous honor. There are so many quality student-athletes playing high school soccer in Oklahoma and to be recognized as the best is quite an accomplishment.
"I am looking forward to having Hayley join our team this fall, and I am very thankful that she chose to continue her career with us at OSU."
