Chinasa On Rotary Lombardi Watch List

April 30, 2010
STILLWATER, Okla. - Oklahoma State defensive end Ugo Chinasa is one of 75 players nationally to be included on the preliminary watch list for the Rotary Lombardi Award.
As a junior in 2009, Chinasa led the Cowboys in tackles for loss with 9.5 and also led the squad with 6.5 sacks and eight quarterback hurries. His 30 tackles led all OSU defensive linemen. Chinasa enjoyed perhaps his best game against Ole Miss in the Cotton Bowl when he recorded five tackles and 2.5 sacks.
His disruption of opposing offenses was one of the keys to Oklahoma State's defensive resurgence in 2009. The Cowboy defense ranked as the fourth-most improved unit in the country from the 2008 season to the 2009 season. The Cowboys allowed 405.54 yards per game to rank 93rd nationally in total defense in 2008, but allowed only 332.54 yards per game in 2009 to rank 31st in the country.
The Cowboys allowed only 95.8 rushing yards per game and just 3.0 yards per attempt by the opposition in 2009. Oklahoma State has not had a defense end the season allowing less than 100 yards per game on the ground since 1982 when the Leslie O'Neal-led Pokes yielded a then-school record low of 99.2 yards per game.
Eligibility for the Rotary Lombardi Award is limited to down linemen, end-to-end, either on offense or defense, who set up no farther than 10 yards to the left or right of the ball, or linebackers who set up no farther than five yards deep from the line of scrimmage.
The Rotary Lombardi Award Watch List will be updated prior to the start of the 2010 season in order to identify those players who have been selected as pre-season honors candidates.
The 41st Rotary Lombardi Award will be held on December 7- 8, 2010 at the George R. Brown Convention Center in Houston, Texas.
Chinasa also appears on the preseason watch list for the Lott Trophy, which was established by the Pacific Club IMPACT Foundation to honor college football's Defensive IMPACT Player of the Year. The Lott Trophy gives equal weight to personal character as well as athletic performance from a defensive college player.
