LUBBOCK, Texas – The No. 56 Oklahoma State women's tennis team fell to 0-2 in Big 12 Conference play Sunday, dropping its match against Texas Tech, 5-1, at the McLeod Tennis Center.
The Cowgirls, now 6-4 in 2010, gave up the first team point of the match as Texas Tech's Natalie Leitch defeated Sasha Belova in two sets at No. 2 singles.
OSU senior Nataliya Shatkovskaya tied the match at 1-1 with a straight-set win over Texas Tech's Elizabeth Ullathorne at the No. 3 spot, but the Red Raiders responded by winning No. 5, 1, 6 and 4 singles to seal the win for Texas Tech.
“The conditions were difficult and we weren't tough enough,” coach Chris Young said. “That has to be the foundation for our program and it's an area where we must improve to be competitive in the conference this season. I give credit to Texas Tech for competing well and doing what they needed to win the match.”
Since the dual began with singles play and the result was already decided, there was no doubles competition.
Oklahoma State now returns to Stillwater for a five-match home stand, beginning with Colorado March 26, at 2 p.m. at the DeBois Tennis Complex.
