OSU vs. Texas Tech Postgame Quotes
OSU Head Coach Kurt Budke
On the game
“Obviously, it was a very disappointing night for us. The players are having a team meeting right now and I think it's a good time to have a team meeting. We had a great week of practice and they didn't carry it over. They just didn't carry it over and it's just pretty much gut check time for this team – 'Are you willing to do the little things that it takes to win in the Big 12?' Obviously, we've done it before this. I don't know if they've hit a little wall here, or whatever has happened, I'm not sure. If I knew the answer I'd tell you, but I don't know the answer. When you get outrebounded 46-33 and you give up 21 offensive rebounds to not one of the stronger rebounding teams in this league, let's just face it. They've struggled on the boards this year. They just came in and out toughed us and blocked out and they did the little things to win this game. Let's just give them credit.”
On trying to find a combination that worked well inside
“There comes a point in time when you've got to respond. You're in the Big 12 and you're a Division I basketball player and I know you can do it, but you've got to perform. We got a lot of empty minutes from the No. 2 guard tonight and we waited too long to get started inside.”
On the team
“This team likes each other. They feel each other's pain, and I think that's what they're talking about right now [in a team meeting]. 'What do we have to do as a team to get out of this?' I've got faith they'll figure it out. They will. At this point in time in the year, we've seen everything thrown at us. It goes back to, 'I can't shoot and I can't rebound.' At some point in time they've got to step up.”
On getting outrebounded
“It's really disappointing. That's been a strength of ours all year and if we're going to continue to win games it better become a strength again very quickly because I think we've been pretty relentless on the board up until the last two. All we can do is show them the tape and show we didn't do a good enough job blocking out and when we did get blocked out we stopped. Things that we did well early in the Big 12 season, we're not doing right now.”
OSU Player Quotes
Andrea Riley
“Very disappointing night. Those are the only words to explain it.”
“We just have to get back to the basics. We haven't been doing the basics the last couple games. We have to block out, we have to rebound and we have to defend.”
“You have to look back at yourself and hold each other accountable and for what we have to get done. It's not over; it's never over. I think we just have to continue to come together and find a way because that's what we did the first six games.”
Toni Young
“We're not in the NCAA tournament or anything yet and we still have to get better and we're still growing, we're just having a little downfall right now but it doesn't matter because it's not over yet.”
“We haven't been blocking out. We all can jump, but we're not putting a body on anybody and they're going right around us. Once we stop that, then no one can stop us.”
Texas Tech coach Kristy Curry
On Jordan Barncastle's night
“We've told her when she catches it, she should look to shoot. She's one of the best shooters on our team. You wouldn't want to play her in 'horse', she can really shoot the ball. I'm just so happy for her.”
On the carryover from the win over Texas A&M
“Obviously, anytime you win, you're feeling better about yourself. You have more pop in your step. We've been so close. We've had some injuries, we had a suspension and we've lost some heartbreakers. That's one thing about these kids is they continued to stay the course and buy in and believe in what we're trying to tell them. “
On her team's recent winning ways
“I think we were happy to get that second one and it makes the third one easier. You can sit here and say what you want but we still believe we can get in at 7-9 or 8-8. You're looking at eight teams in this league that are going to go. ”
Jordan Barncastle
On her big scoring night
“Like she said, all week, they've been telling me to shoot and I don't think it was any different tonight. My role on the team has changed a little bit lately and I've got to give credit to my teammates. I think we all worked really hard.”
On the tough schedule leading into these two wins
“I think we've been working hard all year and playing top-25 teams is no excuse for defeats. Definitely, we don't like the feeling of loss. I think we're doing everything we can do now and we know what it feels like to beat No. 11 or No. 14.”
