KANSAS CITY, Kan. – Oklahoma State head coach Colin Carmichael has been named the 2010 NSCAA/Mondo Central Region Coach of the Year, it was announced today by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.
Carmichael, who has been at the helm of the Cowgirl program for six seasons, was also the NSCAA Central Region Coach of the Year in 2006 and 2008, and he was runner-up for National Coach of the Year in '06.
In 2010, Carmichael led OSU to a record-setting season that included a school record for wins, a trip to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Women's Soccer Championship and a third consecutive Big 12 Conference championship.
“It is a great privilege to be voted as the NSCAA Central Region Coach of the Year by the soccer coaches in our region,” Carmichael said. “Obviously, this award is a tribute to our players and staff. Any coach is only as good as the players that they work with, and we are blessed with so many talented athletes on our team. I am also very fortunate to work with great coaches, administrators and other staff members and would like to thank each of them for their contributions throughout the year.”
The Cowgirls ended the 2010 campaign with a 20-4-2 mark. After finishing second in the regular-season conference standings, OSU won the Big 12 Championship title for the second-straight year. Following that tourney win, the Cowgirls earned their fifth consecutive NCAA Tournament berth and proceeded to advance to the quarterfinals for the first time in school history.
OSU reached several other milestones in '10. In October, the Cowgirls climbed to No. 5 in the national rankings, the highest national ranking in school history. OSU also ended the season ranked fifth nationally.
The Cowgirls also tied a school record in 2010 with a 13-match unbeaten streak from Sept. 3-Oct. 22 as they compiled a 12-0-1 mark during that stretch.
Carmichael, who was named the 2010 Big 12 Conference Co-Coach of the Year, guided a team that also had two All-Americans, a Hermann Trophy semifinalist and five All-Big 12 performers, along with the conference's defensive player of the year and second-leading scorer. OSU led the Big 12 in goals scored while also topping the league in goals against average.
The Regional Coaches of the Year will be joined on the ballot for the NSCAA/Mondo National Coach of the Year by coaches from each of the four national championship semifinal teams. Winners of the national award will be announced at the annual NSCAA Awards Banquet, which will be held January 14 at the Hilton Baltimore in conjunction with the 2011 NSCAA Convention.
