STILLWATER, Okla. - Oklahoma State freshman wrestler Jon Morrison is this week's Big 12 Wrestler of the Week, it was announced today.
Morrison, a 125-pounder from Orland Park, Ill., helped the Cowboys to a 17-16 road win over No. 3 Minnesota last Sunday. He knocked off two-time All-American Zach Sanders when he scored a 7-5 sudden victory to improve his record to 10-0 on the season, with three of those wins coming over ranked opponents.
Morrison's win over Sanders came at a key juncture, as the Cowboys trailed the dual at the time, 9-3.
Morrison got on the board first when he bagged a takedown in the first minute of the match. The underdog then started the second period in the down position and escaped quickly to keep his riding time advantage. Sanders hit a duck-under takedown in the waning seconds to trim Morrison's lead to 3-2. Sanders chose a neutral start to the third period, but Morrison nailed him with a double-leg takedown to go up, 5-2. Sanders tied the score at 5-5 after an escape followed by a takedown and then erased Morrison's riding time point to send the bout into overtime. In the sudden victory period, Sanders came after Morrison, but Morrison came up with the winning takedown with 11 seconds remaining on the clock.
This is the first career conference honor for Morrison and the second for Oklahoma State this season. Sophomore Jordan Oliver captured conference honors for the month of November.
