Reno, Nev. - Six Oklahoma State wrestlers competed in the Reno Tournament of Champions on Sunday in Reno, Nev., with sophomore Tyson Yoder placing sixth in the heavyweight bracket to lead the way for the Cowboys.
With only six members of the team competing, it was not considered as a team event for the Cowboys. None of Oklahoma State's regular starters suited up at the event.
Yoder's day started with a 2-1 win over Oklahoma City's Stanley Lattimore. After he was bumped out of the championship bracket by top-seeded Dave Morgan of Cal State Bakersfield, Yoder battled back with a 2-1 win over Chattanooga's Robert Prigmore and a 3-2 win over West Virginia's Phil Mandzik. Yoder then claimed a medical forfeit win over third-seeded J.T. Felix of Boise State before rolling to a 11-4 win over Southwest Oregon Community College's Justin Williams. Earning a rematch with the top-seeded Morgan for a spot in the third-place bout, Yoder suffered a 3-2 defeat to fall into the fifth place bout, where he lost a 5-1 decision to Ohio's Andy Hartshorn.
Redshirt freshmen Tyler Dorrell and Stephen Swan were both knocked out of the fourth round in the 125-pound and 157-pound weight divisions, respectively. Dorrell won his first three bouts, but then lost to the No. 2 seed Aaron Kalil of Navy 3-2 in the 125-pound division. After having a bye in the first round, Swan went on to win his next two bouts, but lost to the No. 1 seed Adam Hall of Boise State 7-1 in the 157-pound division. Swan won his first bout in the wrestleback 9-5 against Josh Condon of Chattanooga, but then lost in his second to R.J. Pena of Oregon State by fall.
Sophomore Joe Ali won his first bout of the tournament with a major decision win in the 165-pound weight division beating Justin Narduzzo of Hastings 11-2. Ali was then beaten by No. 2 seeded Ryan DesRoches of Cal Poly by fall. Redshirt Freshman Zach White had a tough draw after winning his first bout in the 174-pound weight division 5-3. After beating Joey Granata of Bakersfield, White faced the No. 1 seeded Nich Amuchastegui of Stanford and lost 5-0. Sophomore Elliott Hellwege lost his first bout of the tournament to Nick Tenpenny of North Carolina 3-2 in the 184-pound weight division.
The Cowboys return to action when they face Arizona State in Gallagher Iba Arena on Jan. 2.
