MALELANE, South Africa - Former Oklahoma State standout Pablo Martin successfully defended his title at the Alfred Dunhill Championship on Sunday at Leopard Creek Country Club.
The Malaga, Spain native recovered from a triple bogey at the par-4 17th with a birdie at the 18th for a closing 2-under 70. Martin finished at 11-under 277 and two shots clear of Thorbjorn Olesen, Charl Schwartzel and Anthony Michael.
With his win at the European Tour's season-opening tournament, Martin pocketed $210,000 and became the first player to defend his title in a European Tour event since Padraig Harrington won consecutive British Open titles in 2007 and 2008.
Martin's win was his third career win on Tour. In addition to winning the Dunhill event each of the past two years, he posted a historic victory at the 2007 Estoril Open de Portugal. The win in Portugal made him the first-ever amateur to win a European Tour event.
In 2003 at the age of 17, Martin was the 54-hole leader at the Canarias Open de España, making him the first-ever amateur to lead a European event through three rounds.
