John Smith, Head Coach
Overall thoughts on the dual:
“You like to see that we had four freshmen go out and two of them, Morrison and Rosholt, picked up major decisions and then Bailey and Perry picked up pins. That's what really stands out, in their first dual meet and first match wrestling for our program, it's a good memory. There are definitely some areas we need to work on, our challenge and our competitiveness of our opponents with Minnesota on the road and Bedlam here in the next two weeks will pick up. We need to take it to another level as we prepare for the next two weeks. It was a good start for us, nothing I like more than bonus points. That's what people want to watch, guys out there getting after it, and that's what we did.”
On why he went with Rosholt at heavyweight:
“At this point, and judging from practice, Tyson Yoder is a tough kid and we'll continue to weigh in both of them and look at both of them as we go forward from here. I think with Blake Rosholt, he had a better week in practice and that's why he stepped out for us.”
How he feels the team is wrestling a month into the season:
“Our conditioning right now is good but needs to get better, our intensity can be taken up another level and it has to. It was a good start from the standpoint that we're winning matches, dominating when we can. I still feel there's a few that are wrestling to the competition, but I like what I see right now and in order for us to maintain that edge we have to stay focused each and every day.”
On seeing a couple pins in the first minute of the match:
“There's nothing more exciting than that, throwing somebody down on their head, and people like to see it. Part of what we do is excite the fans, and how you excite the fans is by action and not always throwing or pinning someone, but taking it to people and creating action and being the guy that wears someone out, physically wears someone out because you have great conditioning and I think a couple of our guys are moving in that direction.”
On if there was overall satisfaction:
“I'm real pleased and again it goes back to looking at some of the young guys picking up bonus points and it really paints a positive picture in my head. Jordan Oliver, just a devastating first period, scored 14 points, reminds me of some of the greats – Pat Smith, Yojo Uetake, just some guys that were some of the greatest of all time. I think he's working in that direction, just one fun first period to watch, he's definitely moving in the right direction and we need to keep him on track in his weight control.”
On his first victory as a Cowboy:
"It feels good to come out the first time I'm out there and get a win. I just came off an injury, so I feel like I did pretty well."
On the team's performance through the first month of the season:
"Really good. We're in good shape. We're excited to get it started off."
On the team's overall performance:
"I thought we wrestled well. It was our first dual, so I thought we were excited to come out and wrestle. First dual in Gallagher this year. The competition wasn't great, but it's a match we get to wrestle in front of our fans and everybody was excited for our first home dual."
On his quick victory:
"Lately, I haven't been wrestling my best in some tournaments, and we talked about just getting that attitude back to dominate and try to pin everybody. That's what I tried to do tonight and it ended up working out for me."
On the team's performance through the first month of the season:
"This is probably the best I think our team has looked since I've been here, physically, mentally and emotionally. I feel like everybody's together. We're all on the same path to win an NCAA Tournament and we're all motivated every day. We're trying to get better and we're helping each other."
