STILLWATER, Okla. – Oklahoma State sophomore punter Quinn Sharp is one of 10 national semifinalists for the Ray Guy Award presented to the top punter in the nation, it was announced today.
Sharp leads the Big 12 and is second nationally in punting with a 47.3 yards-per-punt average. He is the driving force behind the Cowboys leading the Big 12 and ranking third nationally in net punting average at 41.3.
A native of Mansfield, Texas, Sharp has a staggering 11 punts of 50 yards or longer and six punts of 60 yards or longer this season. He also has proven himself able to kill punts deep in opponent territory, as four of his punts died inside the Kansas State eight-yard line in the Cowboys' win over the Wildcats in Manhattan on Oct. 30.
Sharp's immediate predecessor at Oklahoma State, Matt Fodge, was the 2008 winner of the Ray Guy Award.
Though it doesn't factor into his punting stats, Sharp leads the nation with a whopping 43 kickoffs resulting in touchbacks. The second-closest team total in the nation is Florida State's 32.
Sharp and the Cowboys travel to Austin to battle Texas at 7 p.m. Saturday on ABC.
