STILLWATER, Okla. - Oklahoma State football coach Mike Gundy is one of seven coaches included on the watch list for the 2010 Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year Award, it was announced.
The only Big 12 coach on the list, Gundy is joined by Auburn's Gene Chizik, Boise State's Chris Petersen, Michigan State's Mark Dantonio, Oregon's Chip Kelly, Arizona's Mike Stoops and Iowa's Kirk Ferentz as those being followed for the Dodd Trophy.
Under Gundy's watch, Oklahoma State has already surpassed what most pundits predicted the program to be capable of this season. With a 7-1 overall record and a 3-1 mark in conference play, the Cowboys control their own destiny in the Big 12 South race despite losing five players off last year's team to NFL rosters. Additionally, OSU has one of the most explosive offenses in the nation despite playing with a first-year quarterback and four first-time starters on the offensive line.
Success has become the norm for Oklahoma State under Gundy, as he has led his alma mater to four straight bowl appearances for the first time in school history. Since the beginning of the 2009 season, Gundy has coached the Cowboys to a 16-5 overall record. That mark trails only Texas and Nebraska, both of whom have compiled 17-5 records during that same span.
The Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year Award is selected by a panel of college football experts plus all previous winners of the Dodd Trophy. The recipient must also excel in other areas. The certificate that comes with the award states: "In recognition of a higher and more noble aspect of college coaching...a style that emphasizes something more than winning the game...a belief that the game of football should be kept in perspective with college life in general."
The recipient of the award will be announced at halftime of the Chick-fil-A Bowl on Dec. 31, 2010.
