John Lindley "Jiggs" Stuart, a two-sport letterman for Oklahoma State in the early 1940s, passed away last week at the age of 89.
Stuart played football for Coach Jim Lookabaugh in 1940 when the Cowboy football team finished 6-3-1, including a 4-1 mark in Missouri Valley play. He also lettered in baseball in both 1941 and '42 for legendary basketball coach Henry Iba and Cowboy coaching great Toby Greene.
Stuart was in the officer's training program and was a First Lieutenant in the army. He served under General Bradley and went into Normandy on D-Day plus one. During World War II, he was awarded the Bronze Star, among other awards.
Stuart started a long line of Cowboy graduates. His oldest son, John Lindley Stuart III, played baseball at Oklahoma State in 1971. Another son, Rusty Stuart, was a member of the Cowboy football squad in 1987-88, and one of his daughters, Dusti Stuart-Kuehne played basketball for the Cowgirls and was a four-year letterwinner from 1991-96.
All six of Jiggs' children graduated from OSU, and so far, three grandchildren have graduated from Oklahoma State as well.
John was proceeded in death by his father John Lindley Stuart and his mother Gertrude; his brother, Ned Stuart, his sisters: Betty Ingle and Jane Speice, Ruth Ann Stuart and his oldest son, John Stuart.
He is survived by his wife Delene Stuart of the home: three sons: Ed Stuart of Stillwater, Okla.; Rusty Stuart of Follett, Texas and Clay Stuart of Shattuck, Okla.; two daughters, Sally Elmore of Stillwater, Okla. and Dusti Kuehne of Southlake, Texas: twelve grandchildren: John Stuart, Mark Stuart, Will Stuart, Sarah Lara, Ben Elmore, Luke Elmore, Jared Elmore, Maddi Stuart, Maci Stuart, Joshua Stuart, Will Kuehne and Elise Stuart; and two great-grand children, Marli Lara and Ford Stuart.
