AUSTIN, Texas – Texas ended Oklahoma State's 13-match unbeaten streak Friday night as the Longhorns knocked off the No. 5 Cowgirls, 1-0, at Myers Stadium.
The loss also snapped OSU's seven-game winning streak as the Cowgirls fell to 7-1-0 in Big 12 Conference play and 14-2-1 overall.
In a match that was a defensive battle throughout, UT's Kylie Doniak scored in the 64th minute to lift the Longhorns (11-3-3, 4-2-2) to the win as they remained unbeaten on their home field this season.
“In the first half, I thought we were the better team and created four or five really good looks at the goal and limited them to maybe one,” said OSU head coach Colin Carmichael. “Against a good team, you have to capitalize on those chances when you get them. Because at the beginning of the second half, they were clearly the better team, created some chances and scored one.
“We thought before the game it was probably gonna be tight. I predicted 1-0 either way. I think the difference was, if they had five chances, they scored one; if we had seven chances, we didn't score.”
In the 21st minute, OSU had a trio of shots on one offensive sequence. The second of those, a 15-yard blast from Krista Lopez, appeared to go over the goal line before being cleared by a Texas defender, but the Cowgirls were not granted a score.
OSU owned a 9-3 advantage on shots in the opening half, and Texas recorded four saves to help send the game into intermission tied 0-0.
The Cowgirls survived one of UT's best scoring opportunities early in the second half when Sophie Campise's shot from 16-yards out sailed high.
Texas nearly converted again in the 55th minute when Kirsten Birkhold blasted a shot from 22-yards out, but OSU goalie AD Franch dove to her right to make the save and keep the match scoreless.
The Longhorns were finally able to convert an opportunity and get on the scoreboard at the 63:04 mark when Birkhold sent a cross to the far side that Doniak headed in from six-yards out to give UT the 1-0 advantage.
UT's goal and 1-0 lead marked the only time this season OSU has trailed other than in the final 42 seconds of its 1-0 loss at Portland.
The Longhorns outshot OSU by a 6-1 count in the final half, while the Cowgirls owned a 10-9 advantage in the match.
Despite the loss, OSU is guaranteed of a top-two finish in the final Big 12 standings. Up next for the Cowgirls is a Sunday match at Texas A&M that, if they win, would clinch at least a share of the regular-season conference title for Carmichael's squad.
“We've got to get over this one pretty quickly and prepare for A&M,” Carmichael said. “Of course we're disappointed we lost, but we'll get over it and get ready for Sunday.”
Sunday's kickoff in College Station is set for 1:30 p.m.
