STILLWATER, Okla. – Oklahoma State running back Kendall Hunter is one of 10 national finalists for the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award in the Football Bowl Subdivision, it was announced today.
To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence – community, classroom, character and competition.
Hunter has received several distinctions for his classroom work, including second-team academic all-Big 12 honors in 2009, a spot on the President's Honor Roll for a 4.0 GPA and honorable-mention Scholar-Baller in 2008 and 2009. Hunter is also a two-time recipient of the Oklahoma State Academic Achievement award and a member of the Big 12 Commissioner's Honor Roll.
A leader both on and off the field for the Cowboys, Hunter arrived at Oklahoma State without a prior history of academic success and low test scores, but is on track to earn his degree this May.
Hunter has helped with the Harvest II Food Drive, made numerous visits to pediatric cancer patients in Tulsa and Oklahoma City and he's also been a guest speaker on leadership and hard work at local high schools in Oklahoma and Texas.
Recently selected as Phil Steele's midseason first-team All-America running back and the No. 2 running back in the nation by Rivals.com, Hunter ranks fifth nationally with 138.3 rushing yards per game and his 10 rushing touchdowns ties him for seventh nationally.
The finalists were chosen by a media committee from the list of 30 candidates that was announced in August. Nationwide fan voting begins immediately to determine the winner. Fans are encouraged to vote via the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award website through December 6. Fan votes will be combined with media and coaches votes to determine the winner.
Lowe's, an official Corporate Partner of the NCAA, will announce the Senior CLASS Award winner January 10, 2011, on ESPN prior to the Tostitos BCS National Championship Game.
