DURHAM, N.C. – Oklahoma State's 2010 baseball recruiting class has been ranked as the 15th-best class in the country by Baseball America, it was announced today.
OSU's No. 15 ranking is the highest of any team in the Big 12 Conference. Stanford tops the list, while LSU was ranked No. 2
The Cowboys' incoming class includes 13 players and counts over 20 when the crop of walk-ons is included. Among the signing class, nine players are from the junior college ranks and three are from the high school level while another is a Division I transfer who is immediately eligible to compete. Continuing the breakdown, the class includes eight pitchers, five infielders and three outfielders. Five of the signees were selected in the 2010 Major League Baseball Draft.
Baseball America cites the “exciting core of power arms” as the key to OSU's class. That group of pitchers is highlighted by freshman Jason Hursh, a right-hander who was a sixth-round draft pick of the Pittsburgh Pirates in June. The class of pitchers also includes junior college transfers Chris Marlowe, Hunter Herrera, Blake Barnes and Vance Woodruff and freshman Vince Wheeland.
The Cowboys also expect to add punch to the lineup with the signing of JUCO stars Jared Womack and Zach Johnson, along with Andrew Heck, who transferred to OSU after Duquesne dropped its program. Heck will be counted on to contribute as a two-way threat as an outfielder and pitcher.
