KANSAS CITY, Kan. – The Oklahoma State soccer program achieved its highest-ever national ranking today when the Cowgirls were ranked No. 5 in this week's NSCAA/HendrickCars.com National Rankings.
OSU's inclusion in the top 5 marks the first time a Big 12 Conference team has been in the top 5 in the national rankings since Texas A&M was No. 2 on Nov. 5, 2007.
“It's a tremendous honor and something our girls can really be proud of, but we realize that all of our goals are still ahead of us,” said OSU head coach Colin Carmichael. “Our main focus right now is trying to win a Big 12 championship and then we want to make a long run in the NCAA Tournament.
“It's nice to receive the recognition, but our girls know they have to continue to go out and prove themselves and show they deserve that status as one of the top teams in the country.”
The Cowgirls are 12-1-1 overall and 5-0-0 in Big 12 play this season and are on an 11-match unbeaten streak (10 wins, one tie). OSU has been nationally ranked throughout the 2010 season and is in its third consecutive week in the top 10.
OSU's previous-best national ranking was No. 7, which the Cowgirls reached three times. Carmichael's squad held the seventh spot in last week's NSCAA rankings and also held the No. 7 spot in 2006 and 2008.
The Cowgirls return to action Thursday when they host Colorado in a game that will be nationally televised on Fox Soccer Channel. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
