IRVINE, Calif. – Oklahoma State relief pitcher Randy McCurry is one of 40 players on the watch list for the 2010 National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Stopper of the Year Award, it was announced by the association today.
A sophomore right-hander from Tupelo, Okla., McCurry tied OSU's single-season saves record as a freshman in 2009 with 10, a total which also ties him for fifth on the school's career-saves list.
In a team-high 28 appearances last season, the 6-foot, 192-pound McCurry also compiled a 4-1 record and a team-best 2.16 ERA. His 10 saves ranked third in the Big 12 Conference, and he racked up 54 strikeouts in 41.2 innings of work.
McCurry is one of five players from the Big 12 on the preseason watch list, which also includes last year's winner, Addison Reed of San Diego State.
Nominations for the NCBWA Stopper of the Year Award were made by baseball sports information/media relation contacts. The initial list will be updated with a mid-season release the week of April 19, including the national saves leaders. At the conclusion of the regular season, the Division I national saves leader and four other relief pitching standouts will be selected as finalists and released Wednesday, June 2, prior to start of NCAA regional tournament competition.
The NCBWA's All-America Committee then will select the winner, with this year's recipient to be announced on the opening day of the College World Series on June 19.
