PHILADELPHIA – Kasey Langdon became Oklahoma State's first-ever Women's Professional Soccer draft pick last week when the Atlanta Beat selected the former Cowgirl forward in the sixth round of the 2010 WPS Draft.
Langdon, a native of Wylie, Texas, completed a standout OSU career in 2009. She played in 86 games over her four seasons, racking up 25 goals and 27 assists. She finished her career second on the school's all-time assists list and fifth in both goals and points (77), and she was a two-time All-Big 12 Conference and three-time All-Central Region performer.
Despite her impressive collegiate career, which included helping OSU compile a 64-17-12 record, win two conference titles and advance to the second round of the NCAA Tournament four times, Langdon was surprised to be selected in the WPS Draft.
“It was honestly unexpected — I didn't think I would be drafted,” said Langdon, who was the first pick in the sixth round. “When Colin (Carmichael) called and told me, I was pretty surprised. It's an awesome feeling and an honor because there's not that many spots so it's hard to get drafted.”
Langdon will report for the Beat's preseason training on March 1 as part of a group of 30 players vying to make the 22-man roster. Atlanta will be coached by Gareth O'Sullivan in its inaugural season in 2010.
“It's pretty much a tryout — just being drafted doesn't mean you're for sure going to make the team,” Langdon said. “But by being drafted you know they're interested in you and hopefully have high expectations for you.”
The WPS completed its inaugural season in 2009 with a seven-team league and added Atlanta and Philadelphia to the mix for 2010. The league is hoping to add a 10th team for the 2010 season.
“We're excited for Kasey, and it's a great opportunity for her to continue her soccer career at the highest level,” said OSU head coach Colin Carmichael. “It's great for our program to be able to help develop players and get them recognized by the professional soccer leagues. It's a testament to Kasey's hard work and dedication that she was thought highly enough of to be drafted.”
