STILLWATER - The Oklahoma State football team has climbed into the top five of the Associated Press college football poll for the first time since 1985 and for just the third time since 1945.
The new poll, released late Tuesday morning, listed Oklahoma State fifth in the country behind Florida, Texas, Southern California and Alabama. The Cowboys are No. 6 in the USA Today coaches poll.
OSU last reached the AP top five on Oct. 8 of 1985. In 1984, the Cowboys spent two more weeks in the top five when OSU was ranked fourth on Nov. 13 and climbed to third the following week on its way to a 10-2 record.
In 1945, then-Oklahoma A&M finished fifth in the final poll of the year following a perfect 9-0 season.
This week's AP poll found OSU's 2009 opponents throughout the list. Big 12 South foe Texas is ranked second. Oklahoma is No. 13. Georgia, which was ranked No. 13 when the Bulldogs visited Stillwater on Saturday, was No. 21 following its loss to the Cowboys. Missouri, Oklahoma State's Homecoming opponent on Oct. 17, entered the poll at No. 25 this week.
Two other Big 12 teams not on OSU's 2009 schedule were also ranked in No. 22 Nebraska and No. 24 Kansas.
