IRVING, Texas – Oklahoma State senior Perrish Cox has been named the first winner of the Big 12 Conference Special Teams Player of the Week for 2009, the league has announced.
The Cowboy from Waco, Texas, keyed OSU's win over No. 13 Georgia when he opened the second half by returning the kickoff 74 yards, setting up an OSU touchdown drive. It was the ninth kickoff return of his career to exceed 50 yards. He has four returns for scores in his career to tie for the lead among all active NCAA players.
Cox also had a 16-yard punt return against the Bulldogs.
Since arriving from University High School in Waco, Cox has been one of America's top return men. He opened his freshman season by returning the opening kickoff of the season 96 yards for a touchdown against Missouri State. He has returned at least one kickoff for a score in each of his three seasons and also has a punt return for a touchdown during his OSU career.
Cox, a starting cornerback on the Cowboy defense, was named an All-American in the return game for his efforts last season. In 2008, he opened and closed the season with 90-yard kickoff returns against Washington State and Oklahoma, respectively.
Cox and OSU will be back in action Saturday afternoon when the Cowboys host the Houston Cougars at 2:30 p.m. in Boone Pickens Stadium. The game will be televised by Fox Sports Net.
