Sept. 28, 2009
Leading up to Satuday's 73rd-annual Cowboy Jamboree, first-year Cowgirl assistant coach Brionne Yosten discussed her return to the Big 12 Conference and preparing for her first Cowboy Jamboree as a coach rather than a competitor. She competed in the Jamboree as an athlete while at Texas Tech.
What brought you back to the Big 12 Conference?
"I have known Dave for a long time. It's a great opportunity to work with him and I think Stillwater is a great place to run and a great town to build a national-caliber team. I think we have all the resources here to do that. I like the people here and it is closer to home. I believe in everything Dave does and I'm glad to work with him."
Are you excited to build the women's program after the success of the men's program?
"From what Dave said when he first got here, we're already ahead of what his men's team was seven years ago. It's taken them that long to get to the top and I think we can do that quicker here. We have some good girls on the team right now, but we were just a little banged up and injured. We're having some luck with recruiting this year. It's a good start. It will take a couple years, but I think we can get there."
What advantage is it for you to learn from an accomplished coach in Dave Smith?
"It's a great experience. I feel honored to be able to work with him to start my career as a coach. He's done some great things."
What do you remember from the Cowboy Jamboree as a runner? "It was my favorite meet in college. I think we ran here every year. I loved it; we had names for all the big hills. I think it's one of the toughest courses I ran on; it's just a fun course. It's a good atmosphere."
What is the difference in preparing as a coach rather than a runner?
"It's a lot of fun because we get to train on the course and we know the course a lot better. It's a big advantage."
