No. 16/16 Oklahoma State vs. Grambling State
Sept. 26, 2009
Boone Pickens Stadium (Stillwater, Okla.)
Oklahoma State's Post-Game Notes
:: Oklahoma State played Saturday's game without three All-Americans, as WR Dez Bryant, RB Kendall Hunter and CB/KR Perrish Cox were all sidelined due to injuries.
:: The announced crowd of 56,901 was good for a new school record, eclipsing the previous mark of 53,012 set earlier this year against Georgia.
:: RB Jeremy Smith rushed for 160 yards in his collegiate debut Saturday. Prior to his performance Saturday, only two OSU true freshmen have ever rushed for 100 yards in their first collegiate games, as Terry Miller rushed for 128 yards against Wichita State in 1974 and Vernand Morency rushed for 108 yards against Louisiana Tech in 2002.
:: OSU held Grambling State to 19 yards of total offense and no first downs in the first quarter. The Tigers didn't get a first down until the 9:40 mark of the second quarter.
:: For the second consecutive game, Oklahoma State held its opponent to a three-and-out on its opening possession of the game. Likewise, for the second consecutive game, the Cowboys scored a touchdown on their opening drive.
:: OSU's first score was a six-yard run by Keith Toston to cap a six-play drive that spanned only 1:41. Toston added two more rushing TDs in the first half to bring his career total to 20 and move him to 10th on OSU's list.
:: True freshman David Paulsen blocked a Grambling State punt in the first quarter, marking OSU's first blocked punt since Markelle Martin blocked a punt against Missouri State last season.
:: RB Jeremy Smith broke a 15-yard run on his first career carry, which came on the Cowboys' opening drive.
:: Cowboy DE Ugo Chinasa logged a sack for the second consecutive week when he dropped QB Greg Dillon in the first quarter. :: Oklahoma State extended its consecutive games with an interception streak to five when LB Patrick Lavine picked off a Greg Dillon pass in the second quarter. The streak dates back to the 2008 Holiday Bowl.
:: QB Zac Robinson extended his OSU record for career touchdown passes when he connected with WR Dameron Fooks in the second quarter. The strike brought Robinson's career total to 57. It was Fooks' first career touchdown reception.
:: QB Zac Robinson completed a pass to seven different receivers in the first half. That total set a season high in the first 30 minutes alone. Cowboy QBs connected with nine different receivers in the game.
:: QB Brandon Weeden connected with WR Tracy Moore for a 28-yard touchdown early in the third quarter. It was Weeden's first career TD pass and was Moore's first career reception. Weeden added a TD pass to Dameron Fooks later in the quarter.
:: Weeden completed 4-of-7 passes for 77 yards and two touchdowns in the game, which was by far his most productive outing as a Cowboy.
:: Grambling State entered the game ranked second in the SWAC in scoring offense at 32.0 points per game. Oklahoma State limited the Tigers to three first-half points and only 90 first-half yards. Grambling was held out of the end zone during the game.
:: Grambling State RB Frank Warren entered Saturday's game leading the SWAC in rushing. He had four carries for three yards in the first half.
:: Among the OSU players to see their first action of the season were OL Grant Garner, Jordan Taormina, DeJuan Davis, QBs Alex Cate and Brandon Weeden, RBs Jeremy Smith and Michael Roberts, WRs Colton Chelf and Adrian Richards, safety Walker Smith, Defensive linemen Horace Hubbard, Andrew Smith, Jarid King, LBs Kenny Alexander, Bryson Hutchins, Tyler Fields and Mathies Long
:: Grambling State DE Christian Anthony was picked as the preseason selection as the SWAC Defensive Player of the Year. He finished with 12 tackles and a forced fumble.
:: LB Andre Sexton entered Oklahoma State's career top-20 in tackles Saturday. His four stops against Grambling State upped his career total to 270, a mark that is 18th in school history.
:: Game captains for the Cowboys were QB Zac Robinson, DT Derek Burton and FB Bryant Ward
:: Oklahoma State won the toss and deferred to the second half.
