STILLWATER, Okla. -- Oklahoma State cornerback Perrish Cox is one of 31 players on the preseason watch list for the 2009 Jim Thorpe Award, it was announced today by the Thorpe Association. The Thorpe Award is given annually to the nation's top defensive back.
Cox, a senior from Waco, Texas, has recorded two interceptions in each of his first three seasons for the Cowboys. He also has 21 pass breakups and 98 tackles in his career.
A standout on special teams, Cox was a first-team All-American as a kick returner in 2008 and has racked up 2,155 yards on kickoff returns, which is an OSU record and just 110 yards shy of the Big 12 Conference career record. Cox has returned four kickoffs for touchdowns in his career.
The Thorpe Association will select 10-12 semifinalists for the award in early November with the three finalists being selected on Nov. 25. The winner will be announced during the Home Depot College Football Awards Show on Dec. 10.
