STILLWATER - The preseason sizzle of the Oklahoma State football program took on a literal sense Wednesday afternoon as the Cowboys toiled their way through one of the hottest workouts in recent history.
After a brief but heavy thunderstorm rolled through Stillwater mid-afternoon, OSU moved its first workout of the season onto the sweltering turf of Boone Pickens Stadium. The practice lasted more than two hours as the Cowboys began fall camp with a roster of 105 players.
This was one for the record books, said senior cornerback and All-America kick returner Perrish Cox of the heat. Head coach Mike Gundy agreed.
It was a good day to practice, he said. It was probably 125 degrees down there but I think everyone did a good job of getting through it. Players were moving around with a lot of adrenalin flowing. We have 28 more practices and we have to get better, but it was a good start.
The mistakes in fundamentals and Xs and Os came from the young guys, the fifth-year head coach said. The first two units did a good job.
Gundy also announced that walk-on kicker Dan Bailey of Mustang, and walk-on running back Bryant Ward of Stillwater have been awarded scholarships.
Both are now on scholarship, Gundy said. When they walked on we told them if they contributed and took care of their class work we would consider paying for their education. I think since we've been here they are sixth and seventh walk-ons to earn scholarships.
