TULSA, Okla. - Oklahoma State sophomore Peter Uihlein saw his run at the U.S. Amateur Championship come to an end on Friday with his quarterfinal loss to Charlie Holland at Southern Hills Country Club.
Holland outlasted Uihlein in 19 holes, making him the second Cowboy to fall during the event to the Texas product. Sophomore Morgan Hoffmann also lost to Holland in a 19-hole match during the first round.
"Charlie played great. He made a lot of putts. We both played solid and I had my chances and he had his chances as well and he came out on top this time," Uihlein said.
Holland won the first two holes with pars before Uihlein used a par-birdie-par stretch over Nos. 4, 5 and 6 to gain his first lead of the match.
The two players both birdied the ninth, sending Uihlein to the back nine with a 1-up lead. However, Holland used birdies at Nos. 10 and 11 to regain the lead before Uihlein pulled even with a birdie of his own at the 12th.
The duo exchanged wins over the next three holes with Holland sandwiching wins at the 13th and 15th around a Uihlein birdie at the 14th to maintain his 1-up advantage. The Cowboy standout made his sixth birdie of the day at the 17th to square the match.
After each player bogeyed the par-4 closing hole, the match moved back to No. 1 where Holland hit his 7-iron approach shot from 172 yards within two inches of the hole. Uihlein conceded his opponents' birdie and missed on his attempt to halve the hole, moving Holland into tomorrow's semifinal round.
