STILLWATER, Okla. — Seniors Bridget Miller and Siera Strawser scored goals Saturday night to lift Oklahoma State to a 2-0 win over Tulsa in an exhibition match at the Cowgirl Soccer Complex.
The 11th-ranked Cowgirls, who netted both their goals in the opening half, outshot TU by a 27-3 margin.
“Anytime you win, you're happy,” said OSU head coach Colin Carmichael. “The main thing is to see what you've been working on and see what needs to be better for next Saturday.
“(Tulsa) had about a 10-minute flurry where they could have gotten a goal, and we were pretty lucky. Over the course of the game we should have had three or four (goals), but we've been working hard on our defensive shape and haven't concentrated too much on our finishing.”
OSU got on the scoreboard early as at the seven-minute mark, Allyson Leggett served a perfect cross into the box, where Miller took the pass and drilled it past TU goalkeeper Katie Bykowski.
“We moved Bridget from defender to midfielder, and she's making runs into the box,” Carmichael said. “She can be dangerous, and it helps our offense.”
The Cowgirls added their final goal of the night in the 38th minute as Strawser's shot from 20-yards out found the back of the net to double OSU's lead.
Tulsa's best scoring threat came in the second half when in the 53rd minute the Golden Hurricane had back-to-back shots on goal. But the first shot hit the near post, and the rebound was blasted off the crossbar.
Freshmen Keely Kippenberger and Charlotte Wood combined for the shutout in goal for the Cowgirls, who open the regular season Saturday with a trip to Boulder to take on Colorado.
“This was a good game for us — it's nice to play someone else and see how everything comes together,” Strawser said. “Colorado is a really good team, and it's good to get a game under our belt.”
