STILLWATER, Okla. - The Oklahoma State football team was picked to finish third in the Big 12 South by members of the media who cover the league, it was announced today.
The Cowboys, who have been a consensus top-10 pick nationally this preseason, have Texas and Oklahoma ahead of them in the Big 12 media poll, as the Longhorns and Sooners split the South division's first-place vote. Nebraska was predicted to win the North division, with Kansas picked second in the North.
Texas Tech, Baylor and Texas A&M round out the South division in the media's preseason poll.
OSU's upward trend has been apparent under fifth-year coach Mike Gundy. The Pokes were sixth in the South in his debut season of 2005, were fifth in 2006 and 2007 before placing fourth in 2008. A third-place finish or higher in 2009 would continue the forward momentum.
Oklahoma State opens Big 12 play when it travels to College Station to battle Texas A&M on Oct. 10. The Cowboys then host Missouri for homecoming on Oct. 17 before traveling to Baylor on Oct. 24. The front-running Longhorns visit Stillwater on Halloween in a game that many feel will shape the complexion of the Big 12 South race. A road date with Iowa State on Nov. 7 will be followed by back-to-back home dates with Texas Tech and Colorado on Nov. 14 and 19, respectively. The season ends with Bedlam in Norman on Nov. 28.
