COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa - A pair of Oklahoma State wrestlers were in action Saturday at the 2009 World Team Trials, with former Cowboy Coleman Scott the challenge tournament runner-up at 60 kilograms and rising OSU junior Clayton Foster losing in the consolation bracket at 96 kilograms.
Scott finished higher than many would have expected him to. The 2008 NCAA champion at 133 pounds started his run to the challenge tournament finals Saturday with a 1-2, 2-1, 2-0 victory over Andy Simmons in the first round. He added a 1-0, 0-2, 7-0 pounding of Matt Valenti in the semifinals. Cowboy fans may remember Valenti as the wrestler who beat Scott in the 2007 NCAA championship bout, but it was Scott who was victorious over Valenti Saturday to set up a title match with Shawn Bunch, who defeated Scott by a 3-0, 1-0 score.
Foster was pinned in 55 seconds in his first match against Brent Jones. He regrouped to upset Wynn Michalak in the wrestleback by a comfortable 3-1, 4-1 margin before being eliminated with a 1-0, 3-1 loss to Scott Stender.
A trio of other Cowboy wrestlers will be in action at the event tomorrow, with Obenson Blanc competing at 55 kilos, Chris Pendleton at 84 kilos and Steve Mocco at 120 kilos. Blanc and Pendleton will have to navigate their way through the challenge tournaments at their respective weight classes, while Mocco will await the winner of the challenge tournament in the championship series at his weight class.
