IRVING, Texas -- Oklahoma State had six players earn 2009 All-Big 12 Conference Baseball accolades, it was announced by the league today.
Highlighting the group of All-Big 12 Cowboys is outfielder Micheal Dabbs, who was the lone Cowboy named first-team all-conference. Outfielder Neil Medchill and pitcher Tyler Blandford earned second-team honors, while catcher Kevin David, third baseman Tyrone Hambly and pitcher Tyler Lyons were named honorable mention. The All-Big 12 awards are selected by the conference's head coaches, who are not allowed to vote for their own players.
Dabbs, a senior from Chandler, Okla., finished the regular season with a .335 batting average to go along with 13 home runs and 38 RBIs. He leads the Big 12 in triples with six and ranks third in the league with a .687 slugging percentage.
In Big 12 play, Dabbs led the league with 40 hits, 80 total bases and a .784 slugging percentage. He hit .392, the second-highest batting average in league games, and blasted nine home runs, which ranked as the third-best total in the conference.
Medchill earned All-Big 12 honors for the second time in his career. A first-team selection last season as a sophomore, the Oxford, Mich. native hit .337 this season and led OSU with 14 home runs and 55 RBIs. He ranks second in the Big 12 in runs scored (62), third in total bases (132) and fourth in slugging percentage (.635) and home runs.
A junior right hander, Blandford earned second-team honors by going 7-3 with a 4.83 ERA on the mound. His seven wins lead the Cowboys, and he racked up a team-high 95 strikeouts, a total which also ranks third in the conference.
A native of Owensboro, Ky., Blandford started 12 games for the Cowboys this season and recorded double-digit strikeouts in four of those outings. Opponents hit just .199 off him, the second-lowest total of any Big 12 hurler.
Hambly earns honorable mention plaudits after leading the Cowboys in hitting with a .338 batting average. The senior from South Australia, who spent most of his time this season at third base, also added nine home runs and 38 RBIs and made just three errors in 54 games at third base and shortstop.
A sophomore, David hit .332 with six homers and 46 RBIs and leads the Big 12 with 23 doubles. His 46 RBIs is the second-highest total by a Cowboy this season.
After earning second-team All-Big 12 honors a year ago, Lyons was named an honorable mention performer in 2009. The southpaw is 6-5 with a 3.75 ERA in 14 games, including two complete game efforts. He leads the team with 84 innings pitched.
