Tallahassee, Fla. - Oklahoma State gave up two runs in the top of the first and was never able to break California pitcher Marissa Drewrey as the 14th-ranked Golden Bears defeated the Cowgirls 2-0 in the winners' bracket game of the Tallahassee Regional here Saturday afternoon in the NCAA Division I Softball Championships. OSU will play the winner of the losers' bracket game between Florida State and Mississippi State at 7:30 p.m. ET.
Cal scored two runs in the top of the first off Cowgirl starter Sarah Odom (13-6). Jamia Reid and Shannon Thomas led off the inning with a pair of seeing-eye singles that just squeaked through the infield. Valerie Arioto walked to load the bases, and Gina Leomiti pushed across the first run of the game with a bases-loaded walk. One out later, Taylor Kelly did the same, scoring Arioto. A couple of fielder's choices ended the inning.
Drewrey threw a perfect game through the first three innings, striking out five. Cowgirl leadoff hitter reached in the fourth on a hit by pitch, but was quickly erased when Katelyn Bright hit a fly ball while Gearhart was attempting to steal, and the speedster was picked off first base.
"I think she (Drewrey) did a great job today," said OSU head coach Rich Wieligman. "I think she was doing a good job of making some spots up and keeping us off balance. We just never could get on her. We got a couple hits, but when we got them on, we couldn't get them in today. I think with our pitchers we did the same thing."
Taylor Marcum broke up Drewrey's no-hitter with a grounder through the left side of the infield. Senior Heather Kim pinch ran for Marcum, and went to second on a sacrifice bunt by freshman Chelsea Garcia. However, she would get no further as Kelsey Anchors and Gearhart struck out swinging to end the threat.
Cowgirl ace Anna Whiddon relieved Odom with the bases loaded and two outs in the fourth. She forced Leomiti to ground out, and struck out four while allowing just one hit over the final 3-1/3 innings.
Oklahoma State (35-21) will face the winner of the Florida State vs. Mississippi State game at approximately 7:30 p.m. ET tonight. The winner of that game will have to defeat Cal twice on Sunday to advance to the Super Regional.
