OSU Leads After Day One At Golf Regional
May 14, 2009 | Cowboy Golf
Oklahoma State's men's golf team grabbed the lead after the first day of action at the NCAA South Central Regional at Karsten Creek Golf Club on Thursday.
The top-seeded Cowboys posted an 8-over total of 296 and finished the day two shots clear of a trio of teams on their home course. Tennessee-Chattanooga, Arkansas and LSU all turned in 298 totals to finish tied for second. TCU and Tulsa finished just one shot back and tied for fifth place at 299.
The field, which includes 13 teams and 10 individuals, played under calm conditions, but battled wet grounds that saw the implementation of the lift, clean and place rule at the par-72, 7,407-yard layout. Only five players among the 75 in the tournament were able to break par on the day.
Of those five players, three are playing unattached, including first-round leader Trent Peterson of South Dakota State. Peterson fired a 5-under 67 and finished three shots ahead of LSU's John Peterson, who posted a 70.
Arkansas' Ethan Tracy was one of three players to post a 71 and was joined by a pair individual competitors in SMU's Kelly Kraft and Louisiana-Lafayette's Devin Carrey at 1-under.
OSU freshman Peter Uihlein was one of five players to get in at even-par 72 and finished tied for sixth place. The Bradenton, Fla., native used a pair of birdies on the front nine to turn at even-par 36 and added two more on the back nine before finishing at even for his inward nine as well.
Sophomore Kevin Tway posted a 74 during his first round and is tied for 21st place. The Edmond, Okla., native made a pair of birdies on his front nine before finding trouble at the eighth, carding a double bogey to turn at 1-over. Tway added a birdie on the back nine before finishing with a matching 37.
A pair of Cowboys finished a stroke behind Tway as senior Trent Leon and sophomore Rickie Fowler each signed for 3-over 75s.
Freshman Morgan Hoffmann, the nation's top-ranked player, carded a 77 and is tied for 41st place.
OSU will begin its second round tomorrow morning at 9:40 a.m. (CST) and will be paired with UTC and Arkansas.
