Cowboys Even Series With Texas
April 05, 2009 | Cowboy Baseball
STILLWATER, Okla. Â Oklahoma State got back in the win column in Big 12 Conference play Saturday with a 7-1 win over No. 9 Texas at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium.
The win snapped a two-game losing streak in league play for the 15th-ranked Cowboys, who improved to 21-9 overall and 4-4 in the Big 12. Texas dropped to 19-8 overall and 5-6 in conference play.
Tyler Blandford remained unbeaten on the mound this season as the junior improved to 6-0 with a 7.1 inning effort. The Cowboy right-hander allowed just one run on two hits while striking out five and has now won six consecutive starts.
Texas starter Brandon Workman (3-3) kept the Cowboys off the scoreboard and allowed just one baserunner over the first three innings, but OSU's offense came alive in the fourth.
With OSU trailing 1-0, sophomore Dean Green got things started for the Cowboys as he led off the bottom of the fourth with a solo home run to right-center field to tie the score.
OSU wasn't done. After a one-out double by Tom Belza, Doug Kroll struck out. But Eric Walker would come through with a clutch hit as he blasted a two-run, opposite-field home run to left to put the Cowboys on top, 3-1.
The Cowboys added a run in the fifth on an RBI single by Belza, which brought home Tyrone Hambly from second.
In the seventh, OSU added three big insurance runs by taking advantage of a crucial error by Texas.
Neil Medchill led off the inning with a double, but Texas retired the next two Cowboys and appeared to be out of the inning after Kroll struck out. But on Kroll's strikeout, UT catcher Cameron Rupp let the ball get past him and then made an error on his throw to first. The passed ball and error allowed Medchill to score to give the Pokes a 5-1 lead.
Rupp's error also kept the inning alive, and after Walker walked to load the bases, OSU again made the Longhorns pay when Rafael Thomas delivered a two-RBI single to left field to give the Cowboys a six-run advantage.
Green finished the contest 2-for-5 with a pair of RBIs, while Hambly also collected two hits. Micheal Dabbs was 1-for-5 to extend his career-long hitting streak to 10 games.
The two teams return to action Sunday for the series-deciding finale at 1 p.m. The game will be televised by FSN.
