Cowboys Drop Game, Series To Texas
April 05, 2009 | Cowboy Baseball
STILLWATER, Okla. Â Oklahoma State dropped its second Big 12 Conference series of the season as No. 9 Texas knocked off the Cowboys, 8-5, in Sunday's series finale at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium.
With the loss, the 15th-ranked Cowboys fell to 21-10 overall and 4-5 in conference play. Texas, which scored four unearned runs in Sunday's game, improved to 20-8 overall and 6-6 in the Big 12.
Texas took the game's early lead in its first at bat. After a throwing error by OSU third baseman Randy McCurry took away a potential inning ending double play, Cameron Rupp delivered an RBI single to put the Longhorns up by a 1-0 count.
But OSU answered in the bottom of the frame with a pair of home runs. The first came off the bat of leadoff batter Micheal Dabbs, whose seventh homer of the season cleared the right field wall and made the score 1-1.
Following a walk to Tyrone Hambly, OSU again went deep as Neil Medchill blasted his team-leading 10th home run of the season to give the Cowboys a 3-1 advantage.
The score remained 3-1 until the fourth when UT took a lead it would never surrender, rallying for four runs on six hits, all of them singles, off OSU starter Tyler Lyons.
With a runner on first and two outs, Lyons was poised to keep the visitors off the scoreboard in the fourth. But a single by Michael Torres put runners on first and third, and Cameron Rowe followed with a single of his own to make the score 3-2.
After a wild pitch moved Longhorns to second and third, Lyons was called for a balk to tie the score at 3-3. Back-to-back RBI base hits by Travis Tucker and Brandon Loy helped Texas regain the lead before Lyons finally got out of the inning.
Trailing by two, OSU pulled within a run in the fifth as Dabbs led off the inning with his second solo homer of the game, a that made the score 5-4.
Texas got back on the scoreboard in the seventh with three more unearned runs. With runners on first and third, Lyons fielded a ball off the bat of David Hernandez, but his errant throw home allowed Rupp to score from third with the Longhorns' sixth run.
After recording the second out of the inning, Lyons was done as the Cowboys called on Brad Propst out of the bullpen. But Propst surrendered a two-RBI single to pinch hitter Russell Moldenhauer to give UT an 8-4 lead.
OSU's final run came in the bottom of the seventh when Rafael Thomas, who had singled and advanced to third on a single by Dabbs, scored on a balk.
Andrew McKirahan earned his first win of the season for Texas with two innings in relief of starter Cole Green. Austin Wood worked the final 4.2 innings, allowing just one run on two hits and striking out seven to earn his sixth save of the year.
Lyons suffered the loss to fall to 4-3 on the year. The junior southpaw allowed eight runs on 11 hits while recording three strikeouts and two walks.
Dabbs led the OSU offense with his 3-for-4, two home run day as he extended his career-long hitting streak to 11 games.
OSU returns to action Wednesday when the Cowboys travel to Springfield, Mo., to battle Missouri State at 6:30 p.m. The Pokes will be back in Big 12 action this weekend at Kansas.
