Cowgirl Softball Splits DH with No. 25 Texas
April 25, 2009 | Cowgirl Softball
Oklahoma State scored all the runs it needed in the first game in the bottom of the second. Megan Castle led off the inning with a base hit through the left side and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Taylor Marcum. After catcher Ashley Boyd reached on an error by the UT third baseman, freshman Chelsea Garcia loaded the bases with a base hit to left.
With two outs, leadoff hitter Mariah Gearhart hit a single into shallow left field, scoring Castle. Katelyn Bright followed with a bloop single just out of the infield that scored two, giving the Cowgirls a 3-0 lead.
OSU made it 4-0 in the bottom of the sixth when Garcia scored her second run of the game on a base hit by Gearhart to right field.
Starting pitcher Anna Whiddon allowed just two hits in 6-1/3 innings before being relieved by lefthander Sarah Odom with one out in the seventh. With the bases loaded, Kacie Gaskin hit a ball through the right side of the infield to score Crystal Saenz from third. Odom struck out the next two batters to end the game and pick up her second save of the season.
Gearhart went 3-for-4 in the first game with two RBIs. Bright was 1-for-4 with two runs batted in, and Garcia scored two runs.
The second game was all Texas. The Longhorns scored four runs in the top of the first thanks to a pair of home runs by Desiree Williams and Loryn Johnson. Williams added another solo shot in the top of the second, and by the time Brittany Barnhill hit a homer of her own, UT was up 6-0. The 'Horns took a 12-0 lead after four innings before Bright's double with two runners on broke up the shutout. Texas won, 12-2.
Oklahoma State (31-18, 6-9 Big 12) will host the Oklahoma Sooners on Wednesday, April 29, at 7 p.m. at Cowgirl Stadium.
