April 19, 2009 | Cowboy Golf
BRYAN, TexasÂOklahoma State's men's golf team posted a 341 team score to grab a five-shot lead on Saturday after the first round of play at the Aggie Invitational at Traditions Golf Club.
The Cowboys blistered the par-72, 7.146-yard layout with a 19-under team total to best tournament host Texas A&M's 346. San Diego State finished the day in third place at 3-under 356.
The event, which was supposed to consist of two rounds on Saturday and 18 holes on Sunday, was reduced to a 36-hole tournament after heavy thunderstorms moved through the area on Saturday morning and forced the cancellation of one round.
Sophomore Rickie Fowler was impressive during Day One, carding seven birdies against no bogeys for a 7-under 65 to grab a share of the individual lead. After opening with a par, the Murrieta, Calif., native birdied his next five holes and added another birdie at the ninth to turn at 6-under 30. Fowler played the inward nine in 1-under 35 after recording eight pars to go with a birdie at the 15th, moving him to the top of the leaderboard.
Fowler will begin tomorrow morning's final round tied with the Aggies' Bronson Burgoon for the individual lead.
Coming in one shot back was freshman Peter Uihlein, who fired a 66 to stand alone in third place. The Bradenton, Fla., native posted a 5-under 31 front side that included three birdies and an eagle. Uihlein also added birdies at the 17th and 18th holes.
A pair of Cowboys; junior Trent Whitekiller and freshman Morgan Hoffmann, each carded 69s on the day to join Fowler and Uihlein in the top five, tying for fifth place
Sophomore Kevin Tway posted an even-par 72 to stand in a tie for 30th place, while senior Trent Leon's 76 put him in a tie for 61st place.
The Cowboys will tee off at 9:38 a.m. (CST) during tomorrow morning's final round and will be paired with Texas A&M.
