April 19, 2009 | Cowboy Golf
BRYAN, TexasÂOklahoma State's men's golf team swept both the team and individual titles on Sunday at the Aggie Invitational at Traditions Golf Club. The victory was the second in the Cowboys' last three outings and their third of the season, while sophomore Rickie Fowler claimed his first victory of the year in the process.
OSU entered the day with a five-shot lead over tournament host Texas A&M at the par-72, 7.146-yard layout after firing a 341 on Saturday. The Cowboys saw their lead disappear quickly on Sunday morning after all six players in the lineup made the turn over par.
However, OSU was able to regain momentum on the back nine to outdistance the Aggies by three strokes. The Cowboys posted a 13-over 373 total to finish at 6-under 714, while A&M took runner-up honors at 717.
Ohio State finishing a distant third with a 21-over total of 741.
The event was reduced to a 36 holes after heavy thunderstorms moved through the area on Saturday morning and forced the cancellation of one round.
After opening with a 7-under 65, sophomore Rickie Fowler closed with a 73 to take medalist honors over freshman teammate Morgan Hoffmann. Fowler went out with a 3-over 39 total and stood at 4-over through 11 holes before closing with three birdies over his final four holes to get in at 1-over for the day. The Murrieta, Calif., native's 138 total was one shot better than Hoffmann and gave Fowler his first victory of the season and the third of his career.
Hoffmann got out of the gate slowly with a 1-over 37 on his front side. Like Fowler, the Saddle Brook, N.J., native steadied himself on the back nine as well. Hoffmann made four birdies on the inward nine, including three in the final five holes to finish with a 2-under 70 and a 139 total. The finish was Hoffmann's second runner-up finish as a Cowboy.
Freshman Peter Uihlein joined Fowler and Hoffmann in the top 10 after following his first-round 66 with a 77 to finish tied for eighth at 143.
Junior Trent Whitekiller tied for 18th place with a 147 total after carding a 78, while sophomore Kevin Tway's 77 gave him a 149 total and tied him for 26th.
Senior Trent Leon finished with his second consecutive 76 to tie for 43rd place at 152.
