Cowboys Sweep Doubleheader Against Arkansas-Pine Bluff
April 15, 2009 | Cowboy Baseball
STILLWATER, Okla. Â Oklahoma State snapped a five-game losing streak Tuesday at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium as the Cowboys swept a doubleheader against Arkansas-Pine Bluff.
The 28th-ranked Cowboys recorded a 9-1 win in the opener before claiming a 10-3 victory in the nightcap as they improved to 23-14 on the season.
Freshman Mark Ginther led OSU's offensive attack on the day, going a combined 6-for-9 in the two games, while Kevin David tied a career high with seven RBIs in the second contest.
On the mound, Jeff Breedlove earned his first win of the season in relief in the opener, and Thomas Keeling improved to 4-1 with his effort in the nightcap.
In the opener, OSU got the scoring started in the bottom of the first inning. Micheal Dabbs walked to lead off the frame, and after stealing second and advancing to third on a wild pitch, he scored on a sacrifice fly by Tyrone Hambly.
The Cowboys took a 2-0 lead in the second when Doug Kroll, who led off the inning with a single, scored on an RBI single by Ginther.
UAPB (16-18) scored its lone run of the game in the third inning off OSU starter Andrew Oliver. Chase Smith opened the frame with a double and later scored on an RBI groundout by Lloyd Burchett to make the score 2-1.
Burchett would be the last batter Oliver faced as Breedlove came out of the Cowboy bullpen with runners on second and third and got out of the inning with a groundout.
Breedlove worked the final 6.1 innings to pick up the win and improve to 1-1. The senior right hander did not allow a run and scattered four hits. He racked up seven strikeouts, tying a career high which he previously set on April 28, 2007 against Texas.
OSU added a run in the fourth on another RBI single by Ginther, and the Cowboys rallied for three runs in the fifth on an RBI single by Dean Green and a pinch-hit, two-RBI base hit off the bat of Rafael Thomas.
The Cowboys' final two runs came in the eighth on RBIs by Hambly and Neil Medchill.
David, Kroll and Ginther each collected three hits in the opener to lead the Cowboys, while Hambly, Green and Ginther drove in two runs apiece.
In the nightcap, OSU used a five-run rally in the second inning and a strong start from Thomas Keeling to earn the sweep.
The Cowboys collected six hits in the pivotal second, the big blow coming on a double by David with the bases loaded that brought all three runners home. Ginther and Medchill also had RBI singles in the inning.
Keeling was dominant on the mound through the first five innings as he did not allow a hit and had just two Golden Lions reach base.
But the sophomore southpaw got into trouble in the sixth as a walk, an infield single and a hit batter loaded the bases with no outs and ended his day on the mound.
UAPB would get all its runs in the fifth, the first two coming on a Jerome McCollum triple off Cowboy reliever Brett Davis. An RBI groundout by Chretien Matz made the score 6-3 before OSU got out of the inning.
The Cowboys added four insurance runs in the seventh, getting a sacrifice fly by Eric Walker before David blasted a three-run home run to end the scoring. The homer was David's third of the season.
Ginther had another three-hit effort in the nightcap, while David, Medchill and Dusty Harvard each collected two hits.
Keeling improved to 4-1 on the season with his five-inning effort in which he allowed two runs on a single hit and struck out seven.
