Cowboys Suffer 8-5 Setback Against Baylor
April 18, 2009 | Cowboy Baseball
STILLWATER, Okla. Â Oklahoma State's Big 12 Conference losing streak reached five as the 28th-ranked Cowboys dropped an 8-5 decision to No. 7 Baylor Friday night at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium.
With the loss, the Cowboys fell to 4-9 in Big 12 play and 24-15 overall. OSU is now 16-7 at home this season.
Tyler Blandford suffered his second-straight loss on the mound for the Cowboys to fall to 6-2 on the season. The junior right hander allowed five runs on seven hits in 5.2 innings of work. He struck out six and walked two.
Four Cowboys combined for OSU's nine hits, with Micheal Dabbs' 3-for-4 effort leading the way. Kevin David, Neil Medchill and Mark Ginther each added two hits.
Baylor (25-11, 10-6) took a lead it would never surrender in the top of the first inning when Aaron Miller blasted a two-run home run with two outs off Blandford.
The Bears pushed their lead to 3-0 in the fourth frame when Raynor Campbell, who had walked and stolen second base, scored on a single by Landis Ware.
OSU pushed across its first run in the bottom of the inning when Medchill delivered a solo home run over the wall in left field. The blast was Medchill's team-leading 11th homer of the season and made the score 3-1.
The visitors got back on the scoreboard in the sixth, getting a pinch-hit, two-RBI single off the bat of Kenton Gedwed to take a four-run lead, before adding two more runs in the seventh to gain a 7-1 advantage.
But the Cowboys answered in the bottom of the seventh. After Ginther doubled and Rafael Thomas reached on an error, a walk to Dabbs loaded the bases. David then stepped to the plate and delivered a bases-clearing double to left field to cut OSU's deficit to 7-4.
The Cowboys would get no closer than three the rest of the way, however, with Dabbs providing their final run in the bottom of the ninth with an opposite-field home run, his ninth round tripper of the season.
Kendal Volz earned the win for Baylor, working 8.1 innings and allowing five runs, just two of them earned, on nine hits. The right hander struck out seven and walked two.
The two teams return to action Saturday at 1 p.m. in a game televised by FSN. OSU will be honoring members of its 1959 national championship team prior to the game.
