Cowboys Lose Series Opener At Kansas
April 11, 2009 | Cowboy Baseball
The loss was also the second in a row for the Cowboys in Big 12 Conference play as they fell to 4-6 in the league and 21-12 overall.
Kansas southpaw Schaeffer Hall tossed a complete game and set a career high with nine strikeouts, and the Jayhawks scored in six of their eight at bats to improve to 21-12 overall and 5-5 in conference play.
The Jayhawks took the game's initial lead in the bottom of the first inning with an unearned run off OSU's Andrew Oliver. With a runner on first and two outs, Buck Afenir singled to right-center field, and Cowboy center fielder Micheal Dabbs made an errant throw to the infield that allowed Brian Heere to score.
KU added to its lead in the third, once again scoring with two outs. Back-to-back singles by David Narodowski and Robby Price opened the inning, and after a sacrifice bunt and a fly out, Tony Thompson delivered a two-RBI single to make the score 3-0.
In the fifth, OSU second baseman Davis Duren dropped a line drive for an error to open the inning, and after a stolen base, Heere collected a bunt single to put runners on first and third with no outs. Thompson then picked up his third RBI of the game with a bloop single to left field.
Following a walk to load the bases, Oliver's day was over after just 4.1 innings. The junior left hander suffered the loss to fall to 4-4 on the season after allowing five runs, three of them earned, on seven hits. He walked three and struck out six.
OSU finally got on the scoreboard in the seventh when Doug Kroll homered to left-center field. Kroll's solo shot, his eighth home run of the season, made the score 6-1.
Hall allowed just five hits, two of them by Kroll, and did not walk a batter as he improved to 3-2 on the season for the Jayhawks.
