Cowboy Wrestling Dominating At U.S. Junior Freestyle Championships
April 11, 2009 | Cowboy Wrestling
LAS VEGAS Â Day one action at the FILA U.S. Junior Freestyle Wrestling Championships wrapped up Friday with three current or future Oklahoma State wrestlers in the finals in their respective weight classes and a fourth OSU wrestler vying for third in his weight class. Current Cowboys Jordan Oliver (60 kilograms) and Alex Meade (74 kilograms) are joined by Oklahoma State signee Chris Perry (84 kilograms) in the finals, with OSU signee Ladd Rupp wrestling for third at 55 kilos. Current Cowboy Chris McNeil is also competing at the event, and will wrestle for seventh place at 84 kilos.
The winners of Saturday's title bouts will automatically qualify for the finals at the U.S. Junior World Team Trials. Making things more interesting is the fact that Oklahoma State assistant Eric Guerrero will coach the U.S. Junior World Team as it trains for and competes at the Junior World Championships in Ankara, Turkey this summer.
Oliver was dominant on Friday, winning each of his four bouts in overwhelming fashion. The Easton, Pa., native opened things up with a 4-0, 5-1 decision over Iowa State freshman Anthony Valles in the first round. He followed that up with a 6-0, 7-0 technical fall win over Penn State's Tyler Saltsman and a 1-0, 7-0 pounding of Boise State's Brian Owen. In the semifinals, Oliver pinned Iowa's Matt McDonough just 12 seconds in to the second period to set up tomorrow's title bout against Iowa State's Andrew Long.
While Oliver racked up big scores, Meade was also dominant and went unscored upon in each of his four bouts. He was a 3-0, 2-0 winner over Northwestern's Jason Welch in the first round before claiming a 6-0, 8-0 technical fall win over Clackamas Community College's Billy Goldsberry in the second round. Meade added a comfortable 5-0, 6-0 win over Oklahoma's Marcus Armato, then pinned California high school standout Patrick Martinez at the 1:06 mark of the second period to advance to the semifinals, where he rolled to a 2-0, 6-0 win over Iowa State's Matt Brown to set up Saturday's title bout against Columbia's Eren Civan.
Stillwater HS senior and Oklahoma State signee Chris Perry entered the event as one of the favorites in his weight class and did not disappoint, bagging a 4-0, 6-0 win over Simon Fraser's Clete Hanson in the first round. He came back with a 3-0, 3-1 second-round win over Iowa signee Ethen Lofthouse. Perry followed that up with a resounding 5-0, 6-0 win over Navy's Luke Rebertus in the quarterfinals before advancing into the title bout with a 1-2, 2-0, 1-0 win over Nebraska's Josh Ihnen in the semis.
Each of OSU's three finalists, plus Rupp and McNeil, will be in action tomorrow.
