GREENSBORO, Ga.ÂOklahoma State's men's golf team earned its second consecutive runner-up finish on Saturday with a second-place showing at the Linger Longer Invitational at Reynolds Landing Golf Club.
The Cowboys entered the final round tied for the top spot with Georgia. However, OSU carded a 290 to finish with a 5-over 869 total and two shots behind the Bulldogs. Wichita State finished a distant third at 882.
OSU did produce the event's medalist as junior Trent Whitekiller earned his first career victory after firing a tournament-low 66 during his final round. The Sallisaw, Okla., native's 8-under 208 total was good for a one-shot victory.
Competing as an individual, Whitekiller moved into contention during Friday's second round after posting a 68 to jump into a tie for fourth place and stand four shots off the lead. Starting on the back nine on Saturday, he birdied three of his first five holes before making the turn at 2-under 34. Whitekiller then caught fire on his inward nine with birdies on Nos. 2, 4, 5, 6, and 8 before finishing at 6-under for the day.
A pair of teammates joined Whitekiller in the top 10 as sophomore Rickie Fowler tied for fifth and senior Trent Leon tied for seventh. Fowler carded an even-par 72 and finished with a 216 total, while Leon was a stroke back at 217 after carding a 68 to close.
Sophomore Kevin Tway narrowly missed out on a top 10 of his own, finishing in 11th place at 218 after carding a round of 76.
Freshman Morgan Hoffmann posted a 74 to finish tied for 13th place at 221, while fellow freshman Peter Uihlein carded a 78 to finish tied for 25th at 225.
